My creative process is a constant dialogue across diverse mediums, each offering a different way to explore space, time, and memory:
Paintings (Acrylic & Digital):
When I paint, my motivation is not just to replicate a landscape, but to capture how that specific place felt, sharing that exact emotional energy with the viewer. Growing up on the ocean deeply influenced my vision; I am continually drawn to seascapes, dramatic sea storms, and dynamic cloudscapes. Using acrylics for their brightness and rapid layering capabilities, I often compose walking trails and expansive water scenes that act as a visual journey, drawing the viewer directly into the environment. Digital painting provides a fluid sandbox to experiment with these light and color relationships, directly informing the textures of my physical canvases, including my work on long, narrow wood planks.
Why Plank Paintings?
Painting on oak panels that are either long and narrow or wide and short allows a simplified exploration of color layers. These paintings are mounted flat on the wall space above windows, or on end walls, posts, or next to doorways. These are often overlooked and underutilized spaces in one's home.
Kinetic Mobiles:
Mobiles are an art form rooted in the legacy of Alexander Calder. I spent over twenty years studying and recreating Calder's pieces to master the intricate craft of balance, using extensive experimentation to develop alternative pivot technologies. Fabricated with steel structures for lightweight rigidity, my mobiles use flat painted metal panels, tumbled sea glass, or polished stone to add subtle sparkle and modulate movement. Whether abstract or shaped to recreate the natural, fluid swimming and flying motions of birds, marlins, and dolphins, these pieces are meant to be fun and joyful. Their appeal lies in their perpetual motion—they are never the same from one glance to the next—and the captivating shadow play they cast from high, light-filled spaces.
Sculpture:
In contrast to the weightlessness of mobiles, my wood and stone sculptures embody permanence and tactile presence. Working with materials ranging from small, handheld pieces to three-foot-wide reliefs, I seek natural, smooth, flowing shapes. The form emerges and converges through thousands of repetitive hand, arm, and eye motions across the hard surface. I finish these pieces with a high polish to highlight the inherent, raw beauty of the material, creating a finished form that is beautiful, tactile, and interesting from all angles.
Ultimately, my art bridges the structural and the emotional. Whether orchestrating the precise engineering of a mobile, finding the form hidden within a block of wood, or layering the energy of a coastal storm on canvas, I am chasing a sense of alignment. Every piece is an invitation to step onto the trail, watch the shifting shadows, and observe the quiet choreography of the world around us.
